This photo combines two parts of my textile history. The McKie clan plaid dates at least to the Victorian fascination with all things Scottish, and to my Scottish immigrant ancestors. My Swedish great-grandfather Gunnar Nelson immigrated in 1906, and the hand-spun, hand-dyed, and hand-woven wool for the pillow was woven by his grandmother in Sweden. On his last trip back to Sweden, he brought pieces back, and his daughter (my grandmother) made pillows for my cousins and me. The idea that threads connect us to the past is very practical and concrete to me.
